To mark the 75th anniversary of the United Nations (UN), the Bertelsmann Stiftung surveyed Germans' views on international cooperation. The study revealed that the majority of Germans are multilateralists. According to the survey, 80 percent of respondents call for international cooperation to solve global problems, and 65 percent would accept short-term disadvantages for Germany in return.
However, the motives of German multilateralists differ. The rheingold institute was able to identify four types that are guided by different interests. One group favors international cooperation out of individual self-interest. A second is concerned with asserting national self-interest. A third group wants more global justice, while the fourth group wants a diverse world based on equal values.
